Kootenay Lake School District No. 8 will be opening up classrooms for full day Kindergarten next year.
Funding from the Ministry of Education will create 204 seats for parents who would like to have their children spend full days in Kindergarten classrooms, as opposed to the current half-day slots.
The school district is expecting 325 Kindergarten students to register next year, so the program will be made available on a zone-by-zone basis.
Starting in September 2010, the program will be available in the Creston, Slocan Valley, Salmo and North Kootenay Lake zones, but by 2011 all zones in the district should have access to full day kindergarten.
Kindergarten will remain an optional program, but students enrolled in the full day program will be expected to attend school all five days of the week.
Full day Kindergarten students will attend school on the same schedule as all other elementary students and will follow the framework of the primary education program – with an emphasis on play learning.
The school district will make further details on the program available as they come down the pipeline.
