QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Editorial
Secure in History
In preserving our local history, Shawn Lamb has found a special place in it

She is one of those people who make Nelson a special community. A humble woman who attacks her important — yet mostly unnoticed — role in the our lives with passion and enthusiasm.

I first met Shawn Lamb in the dark, overcrowded space that once stood as Nelson's Museum, then located across the street from Hume Elementary. The reason for the visit escapes me after more than 14 years, but the immediate impact she made is lasting.

Excited to help today so she could further strengthen our past. It was clear from the moment I shook her hand Shawn was a resource that would become vital to my duties at the newspaper.

Shawn endured more than a decade struggle to bring a proper museum/archives facility to Nelson that would be worthy of our wonderful history. During this time there were bitter debates between arts groups and sports groups as they battled for territory and attempted to prove their worth to the community. Throughout all the public meetings and strife, Shawn kept her emotions in balance. Her wisdom and approach helped eventually make the dream of Touchstones Nelson a reality on Ward and Vernon.

History tends to remember the outspoken, heroic and unique the most. Politicians, business leaders, war heroes, sports stars, artists and activists get the most headlines and in turn their place in the building of this community is secure. The evidence can be found in the very archives Shawn Lamb has worked so hard over the years to build and protect.

Shawn is as important to our history as all of the above. Yet she expects no rewards other than perhaps "thanks" for a job well done.

Shawn is now retiring from her role as Touchstones archivist. This weekend a special show opens at Touchstones that will celebrate her enduring contributions to this community. If you care about the Nelson area you will check it out. She deserves our thanks and respect for modestly helping enrich all of our lives.

I knew Shawn very well when I lived in Nelson and have great admiration for her, she is a wonderful lady.

My late father was, at the time of his passing, in 1997, the oldest living member of one of Nelson's few founding families. Shawn interviewed him and recorded his fabulous memory for posterity and did so with great sensitivity and kindness.

Nelson is fortunate to have her.

Nothing like a little reverse psychology to keep this article kicking around as long as possible.

I was wondering if this story could be removed from your website -- it's over two months old, and wasn't particulary well written to start with.
