QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Local News
NPD uncover two pounds of marijuana in search
A pair of young Cranbrook males — 18 and 15 — arrested on Nelson’s waterfront

Two pounds of marijuana and several thousands of dollars in cash were seized by Nelson Police Department after an officer observed a suspicious vehicle near the City yards Thursday night.

An officer on patrol noted the car occupied by two males in the area of the City of Nelson public works yard on Lakeside Drive late Thursday evening.

When the officer stopped the car the resulting investigation of the two males uncovered some marijuana. The two males, aged 18 and 15, were arrested for possession of marijuana, the vehicle was subsequently impounded and a search warrant was obtained.

“The search of the vehicle revealed two pounds of dried and packaged marijuana and several thousand dollars in cash,” said Sgt. Steve Bank.

The two males from Cranbrook are now facing charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime. They will appear in Nelson Provincial Court on December 1.

On Saturday afternoon, a 25-year-old man was once bitten twice shy as he caused mischief and a disturbance on two separate occasions in downtown Nelson.

Initially the man allegedly caused several hundred dollars worth of damage to a gas-powered scooter with his skateboard, an act which netted him a mischief under $5,000 charge.

He was released soon after the 3 p.m. incident — with a promise to appear in court and a condition not to attend the store where the mischief occurred. He did not comply.

A few minutes after he was released he went straight back to the store and was arrested for causing a disturbance and failing to comply with his conditions. The man was remanded into custody and will appear in Rossland Provincial Court September 21.

Later that night police were embroiled in a domestic dispute at a local hotel around 10 p.m.

Police had received a call from the hotel staff concerned there was a possible dispute in one of the rooms. NPD officers found a 42-year-old female and a 32-year-old male had been drinking all evening and yelling at each other in the room.

They were arrested outside of their hotel room for breach of the peace and being intoxicated in a public place. The two spent the night in jail but were released the following morning.

They are "victims", surely - but of their own stupidity and greed. A big bag of dope and a slug of cash?...that's called dealing. And a 15-yr old? Jeez. Anyway, as a juvenile he won't have a record. The 18 yr old deserves to have one for embroiling the kid in this.

"Victims"? Well, that was their choice. They weren't just a couple of kids having a quiet toke - they had a fair-sized stash and a slug of cash. That's called "dealing".

18 and 15 years old, and now with a criminal record, tainted for life. Sure, they broke the law and are paying the price for their own stupidity. But not a joint less was smoked in Nelson or Cranbrook because of their arrest, and all the Nelson Police officers really achieved (just doing their job, as they should) was to create 2 more victims of the War on Drugs.

Legalization would be good for Nelson's & the whole country's economy! Hemp was a "New Billion Dollar Crop" according to a 1938 issue of Popular Mechanics (http://www.jackherer.com/popmech.html). And that didn't include the smoking/recreational/medical value of the plant which alone is now worth billions of dollars. Add hemp and pot together and we may have the "New Trillion Dollar Crop."

This means lots of legal jobs for all of us, not just those who are lucky, or tough, or violent enough to protect their illicit investment. Buds would probably be worth their weight in tomatoes rather than gold but that would be much better for all concerned especially the sick and the poor.

Nelson would be like the Napa Valley of pot not because of our climate which actually sucks for outdoor buds compared to say Grand Forks or the Okanagan but because of our expertise. Good buds can be grown indoors anywhere but Nelson has a large pool of resourceful and knowledgeable people going back to the Doukhobors and the Vietnam war resisters.

I can't think of anything worse for the local economy that legalizing it. I've long suspected that legalizing pot would turn Nelson into a ghost town within 10 or 15 years.

When is BC going to legalize and tax pot, so we can exterminate the proposed HST?
